Whether you’re a seasoned runner or new to the racing scene, preparation is everything. Kate and I recently completed our first race event together, and we’ve compiled some essential do’s and don’ts to help you make the most of your next event.

The run was called Run Prix – here’s the website: https://www.runprix.com.au/

From picking the right hotel to ensuring you’re energised and comfortable, here are the tips we swear by:

Do’s:

1. Book a Hotel Near the Event (Carb Up!):
One of the best decisions we’ve made is staying close to the event. Being just minutes away from the starting line eliminates unnecessary stress on race day. Plus, staying local gives you the chance to find good carb-heavy dinner options nearby. A well-timed pasta meal the night before fuels your body for the challenge ahead. We stayed at The Kinson.

2. Collect Your Bib the Day Before:
Don’t leave anything to the last minute. Picking up your race bib and any event materials the day before ensures a smooth start to your morning and avoids the risk of long lines. You’ll also have more time to familiarize yourself with the race map and course.

3. Arrive Early – Time Flies!
Trust us, race morning passes quicker than you think. Give yourself plenty of time to get ready, drop your bag, and mentally prepare. Rushing to the start line can mess with your focus and energy levels.

4. Use the Bag Drop:
This can be a lifesaver. Pack a bag with your essentials – warm clothing for after the race, snacks, and recovery gear. You’ll thank yourself when you have easy access to your post-race comforts.

5. Pre-Workout for an Extra Boost:
We found that taking a light pre-workout (nothing too heavy) before heading to the start line really helps get us in the zone. It’s great for that extra bit of focus and energy, especially for those early morning races when you’re not fully awake yet.

6. Use the Bathrooms – Even if You Don’t Think You Need To:
You might not feel the need to go, but it’s always smart to make a bathroom stop before the race. There’s nothing worse than being halfway through and desperately needing to find a restroom.

7. Gummies or Gels (Pack Your Own!):
Many events don’t provide energy gels at hydration stations, so bring your own fuel for the race. We like gummies, but whatever you choose, make sure it’s something you’ve tried before during your training runs (more on this in the don’ts).

8. Check Out the Event Expo:
If the race has an expo, take the time to explore. These expos are packed with professionals offering advice, gear, and nutrition products. You might even pick up some last-minute tips that could help on race day.

Don’ts:

1. Don’t Try a New Gel on Race Day:
This is one of the most important don’ts. Never experiment with new gels or energy products during a race. Stick to what you know works for you. Trying something unfamiliar can lead to stomach issues or lack of energy when you need it most.

2. Don’t Wear Brand New Clothing:
New clothes might seem like a great idea, but race day is not the time to break in that fresh pair of shorts or top. Unfamiliar gear can cause chafing or discomfort, and the last thing you want is to be distracted by irritation during your run.

3. Don’t Skip Reading the Race Map:
Take time to read the event guide and familiarize yourself with the starting points, hydration stations, and finish line details. Misreading the map or missing a key detail can cause unnecessary stress on race day.

4. Don’t Forget Snacks for After the Race:
While races often provide some food post-run, it’s always a good idea to bring your own snacks for after the event. You’ll want something quick and easy to help your recovery. We like to pack a banana and a protein bar to replenish our energy right away.

5. Don’t Forget to Stretch – Before and After:
Stretching is essential, both pre- and post-race. Take time to properly warm up before hitting the course, and don’t skip your cooldown routine afterwards. Stretching reduces the chance of injury and helps your muscles recover more quickly.

By sticking to these do’s and don’ts, you’ll set yourself up for a smoother, more enjoyable race day. Whether it’s ensuring you’re prepared with the right fuel or simply arriving early to soak in the pre-race atmosphere, these tips have become our go-to strategy. We’re looking forward to sharing more about our running journey, so stay tuned for future event recaps, gear reviews, and more!

Joshua & Katherine
